Be Secure …In Your Home

With a third of all burglaries due to people leaving doors and windows open or unlocked, a few simple steps can reduce the likelihood of your home being targeted.

Here are some key tips for keeping yourself and your home safe this Christmas:

  • Keep external doors and windows locked, especially if no-one is in the room.
  • Don’t make it easy for someone to steal Christmas presents from your home. Keep them out of sight until last thing on Christmas Eve and if you 'hide' or store larger items such as bicycles in the shed or outbuildings, make sure they are very secure.
  • Mark all your valuable belongings with your postcode, house number or first two letters of your house name with a UV pen. = Empty boxes left outside advertise that you have new goods inside - dispose of packing carefully.
  • If leaving your house empty, leave a light on and consider fitting timer switches on lights – remember it may start getting dark before you return. Don't leave curtains open so people can see your decorations as potential thieves can see in.

When you are Christmas shopping, try to avoid crowds. If you can't arrange to shop during less busy times, make sure you stay alert and be extra careful with your wallet or purse. If you have too many bags you will be too busy trying to hold on to these to be aware of anyone stealing from you. Try to make smaller shopping trips rather than do it all at once and carry too much.

Register your property free of charge at www.immobilise.com. This is a national database that police can access and compare recovered goods against items that have been found or seized from suspected criminals. It helps identify the owner of lost & stolen goods, and combat the sale of stolen property.

Keep Burglars out in the cold this winter

Police in Bolton have launched their latest crackdown on burglars in the borough, to keep the pressure firmly on through the autumn and winter months.

Thanks to the intensive work that has been carried out across Bolton to tackle these criminals over the past few months, 243 fewer people have fallen victim to burglary in Bolton between July and October to date compared to last year, a decrease of 37 per cent.

However police have vowed not to rest on their laurels but to continue the fight to reduce burglaries and bring offenders to justice in the lead up to Christmas. Inspector Barry Short who is leading Bolton’s burglary crackdown said:

“Though these figures show we are winning the fight against burglars, it is important to understand that this is a horrible crime that can cause deep distress to the people that have the misfortune to be touched by it.  Criminals can be assured that we are on their tails and there is every chance that they will be seeing the New Year in behind bars.”

Police across Bolton will continue to target known and suspected burglars through stop checks and home visits.  Suspected offenders will be subjected to increased overt and covert surveillance, those on bail will get more home visits by officers to ensure they are complying with curfew and court conditions and there will be a step up in police patrols targeting burglars.

Offenders just released from prison will continue to be closely monitored and officers will conduct regular checks at second-hand outlets and scrap yards to ensure they are not handling stolen goods.
