Deliberate small fires

In 2006 the Fire and Rescue Service attended just over 1,700 fires that were known to be small and of low risk to the public and firefighters. Factors such as the weather can influence when and where these small fires occur but many are the result of either carelessness, people playing with fire or anti-social behaviour. The problem of small fires is taken seriously by the BeSafe partnership because it can take firefighters away from important work. Many of the small fires that occur across the borough can be prevented and we are working with communities to reduce the burden of small fires on our communities. The Fire and Rescue Service has a key objective of ‘reducing the Impact’ which seeks to assist in the introduction of initiatives to improve community safety. Small fires need to be reduced to allow resources to the channeled away from response to prevention.
